Perseverance: Women in the Industry
Sponsored by Women in Film & Television – Florida
and Film Florida
Despite the increasing prominence of a handful of female directors and Kathryn Bigelow’s Oscar® for The Hurt Locker three years ago, the number of women working in top behind-the-camera roles on feature films is still pretty slim. A recent survey found that women comprised only 18% of the directors, writers, producers, cinematographers, and editors on the top 250 domestic films of 2012. In the indie film world that number increases to just under 30% for films that have played Sundance over the last 10 years. Breaking into the biz is tough for anyone, but what are the unique challenges facing women today as they try to crack the “Celluloid Ceiling?” A stellar panel of female visionaries will discuss their personal experiences and what it means to be a successful woman working in movies today. Panelists include Oscar® and Emmy award nominee, editor/director Sari Gilman (“Kings Point,” Ghosts of Abu Ghraib); award-winning and Emmy nominated filmmaker Brooke Sebold (Red Without Blue, “After the Snow”); veteran director Susan Seidelman (Desperately Seeking Susan, HBO’s Sex and the City); and Sylvia Caminer, FFF and Emmy® Award-winning director/producer (An Affair of the Heart, Tanzania: A Friendship Journey). Anne Watters, Program Director of Film at Full Sail University, will moderate.
