About the film:
“Renee is 19. When I meet her, cocaine is fresh in her system. She hasn’t slept in 36 hours, and she won’t for another 24. It is a familiar blur of coke, pot, pills, and alcohol. She says she’ll go to rehab tomorrow, but she isn’t ready now.” So wrote Jamie Tworkowski, founder of To Write Love on Her Arms, who posted a story on MySpace about a troubled young woman in Central Florida that resonated with teenagers and young adults worldwide. Inspired by the true story of Renee Yohe, a 19-year-old who made a commitment to cease her cycle of chaos from drug addiction, alcohol abuse, and self-injury, RENEE boldly tells the tale of a young girl who grew up loving fairy tales but lived through a considerably darker truth. Skillfully blending gritty reality with rich fantasy, this Orlando production uses much local talent on both sides of the camera and boasts a remarkable cast of bright young stars. Kat Dennings (TV’s 2 Broke Girls, Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist) is a knockout as Renee, and Chad Michael Murray (TV’s One Tree Hill), Rupert Friend (The Young Victoria), and Corbin Bleu (High School Musical) lend superb support along with a great music score and appearances by Rachael Yamagata and Travie McCoy of Gym Class Heroes. The 21st annual Florida Film Festival is proud to present this extraordinary Florida story as its Opening Night Film.
