NORTH AMERICAN PREMIERE

Ladies and gentlemen, here we have a classic case of zigging when one should have zagged. In the music scene of the early 1970s, Jobriath was a vastly talented nobody who nabbed one of the richest deals in rock history. Sporting a theatrical pop style that recalled David Bowie, Jobriath and his partner/hype machine Jerry Brandt attempted to leverage Bowie’s bisexual persona by taking it one step further. Jobriath openly proclaimed his homosexuality by declaring himself “The True Fairy of Rock & Roll.” It was a stupendous miscalculation. Mainstream audiences shunned him. Gay audiences on the road to disco ignored him. Critics overwhelmed by the hype dismissed him. Jobriath’s two albums went directly to the landfill. Excommunicated from the biz, Jobriath retreated to obscurity, piano lounges, and a lonely death of AIDS in 1983, one of the first rock stars to pass from that then little-known epidemic. But you can’t keep a true fairy down, and over the next decades, Jobriath’s music was rediscovered and championed by the likes of the Pet Shop Boys, Def Leppard’s Joe Elliot, and Morrissey, who helped put out a compilation CD. Now, nearly 40 years after his solo debut—with the help of rare live footage, deeply revealing interviews with friends and family, complete access to Jobriath’s music, and original animation—the bizarre, tragic, and nearly forgotten mystery that was Jobriath is ready for its close-up.
