Alexander Fehling (Inglourious Basterds) is flawless in this comical, passionate, and historical romance about the early years of Germany’s most illustrious literary genius, Johann Wolfgang Goethe. The year is 1772, and young Goethe dreams of being a poet. But after failing his law exams, he is sent by his father to a sleepy provincial court to mend his ways as a lowly law clerk. At first, he does his best and wins the praise and friendship of his superior, Kestner (Moritz Bleibtreu, Run Lola Run). Then he meets and falls deeply in love with the beautiful Lotte, who responds to his poetry as no one else has. Lotte’s father (Burghart Klaußner, The White Ribbon), however, puts his family’s future well-being first and is determined that Lotte marry the wealthy Kestner. The intense and unfulfilled love between Lotte and Goethe became the template for his masterpiece, The Sorrows of Young Werther, the book that launched a thousand broken-hearted suicides. Rendered in all the natural beauty of the period, this sweetly charming film delivers a fascinating and enthralling tale of star-crossed love and loss.
