This film plays part of the special event, An Evening with Edward James Olmos.
Academy Award®-nominee Edward James Olmos will be in attendance during this special 20th anniversary event to present the 1988 independent classic, Stand and Deliver. Mr. Olmos, who has received numerous award recognitions and is also known for his TV roles on Battlestar Galactica and Miami Vice, will participate in an engaging question and answer session with movie-goers after the screening of the film.
Stand and Deliver was one of the most highly regarded independent films of 1988 and swept the Independent Spirit Awards with an astonishing six wins. It also received several nominations, including an Oscar® (for Olmos), two Golden Globes®, and the 1988 Sundance Grand Jury Prize.
Based on a true story, Olmos gives a tour-de-force, Oscar-nominated performance in this outstanding drama as a tough, demanding teacher who inspires his East L.A. barrio students to pass an AP Calculus test…and that’s only the beginning of the story. His portrayal of Jaime Escalante, the Bolivian born son of two educators who came to America and eventually taught mathematics at Garfield High School, is the stuff of legend. Lou Diamond Phillips and Andy Garcia are part of the superb supporting cast in this beautifully entertaining story of academic achievement in the face of enormous odds.
