SOUTHEAST PREMIERE
Actor Dan Byrd (Cougar Town, Heroes) captures the audience before he speaks his first word, with eyes that reveal plenty about this smart, angry, scared teenager who has lost his mother to a violent accident and is coming to terms with losing his father too. An outsider adrift, he lets slip at school a ridiculous lie and then cannot bring himself to call it back, choosing instead to watch it grow and bring him the gifts of popularity, fame, and the love of a precious girl (Brothers & Sisters’ Emily VanCamp, who is truly luminous). But a price must be paid, and the audience wonders right along with Norman, how it will all play out. Byrd summons tremendous empathy from the audience, who feels every ounce of his pain at letting go of his dad (the wonderful Richard Jenkins, Six Feet Under, Academy Award nominee for The Visitor), his last link to a normal life. Darkly funny, this multiple-festival award-winner also features Adam Goldberg (Entourage), terrific as a caring teacher, and a memorable score by Chicago multi-instrumentalist — and whistler extraordinaire — Andrew Bird.
