After a surprise government inspection, big cat owner Dennis Hill is given five days to find homes for twenty-one of his “pet” tigers and bring his backyard breeding/selling operation up to code, or else the state of Indiana will shut him down permanently. Is this the unfair persecution of an animal lover with a colorful past? Or does Dennis Hill represent all that is wrong in the world of exotic animal breeding? As Hill hurries to relocate his Bengal tigers, his many detractors voice their concerns over not only his ability to properly care for his tigers, but also the bigger question of why more tigers live in private captivity in the United States than in the wild. THE TIGER NEXT DOOR, the first doc feature in 8 years from the director of FFF 2001’s Prisoners in Paradise, does a masterful job of exploring the questions of the rights of individuals to own exotic pets, and how many Bengal tigers might be too many for one backyard?
