The Sun Came Out

I hate to burst your collective bubble, but making music is not always the back-stabbing, tragedy-a-second trauma featured in VH1 music docs. Sometimes, musicians like each other, smile, and have fun. Feel-good case in point, THE SUN CAME OUT, started as the blissed-out dream of New Zealander Neil Finn (of Crowded House and Split Enz fame). Finn invited more than a dozen musician friends and their families to New Zealand for three weeks around Christmas. The goal was to collaborate on songs, record an album, play a few shows, and break up before anyone got antsy. Proceeds would benefit Oxfam International. The assemblage dubbed themselves 7 Worlds Collide and included KT Tunstall, Johnny Marr, half of Radiohead, Jeff Tweedy and most of Wilco, Liam Finn, Lisa Germano, Sebastian Steinberg (Soul Coughing), and others. To keep the vibe right, kids were encouraged to wander in and out of the studio (and sometimes join in) while their parents played. Equally influential was the stunning New Zealand landscape and beaches where everyone lived and played in the off-hours. The filmmakers take care to spotlight every player, showing off personalities not usually seen on stage, and the relaxed tone will make you wish you too had plans to spend Christmas near a beach in New Zealand while making a record with Neil Finn. Neil? Are you listening? We’re available.
