Dinosaurs, dodos, movie projectors—how do such ubiquitous things come to be obsolete? And could love and humanity someday be among them? George, a solitary librarian and encyclopedia salesman, thinks so. He’s writing a book about “obselidia,” cataloging the once-beloved things that end up abandoned in our ever-changing world. Through this work he meets Sophie, a lively, optimistic movie projectionist, and the two begin a comfortable if unlikely friendship. At Sophie’s behest they take a road trip to Death Valley to interview Lewis Fordham, a scientist and beekeeper who believes humanity doesn’t have much more time. George’s resigned acceptance of this idea and Sophie’s resistance to the abandonment of hope are two sides to the coin flip of our destiny. A contemplative, beautifully constructed film (including a bit of a performance by 80 year-old ballerina Marta Beckett), OBSELIDIA—recent winner of two awards at Sundance 2010, including Excellence in Cinematography—asks us to consider an important question: what do you have in this world that you think is worth saving?
