Inspired by the elegant Hollywood melodramas of Douglas Sirk, the aristocratic world-on-the-cusp-of-change of Luchino Visconti’s The Leopard, and even Shakespeare’s King Lear, Luca Guadagnino’s stunning I AM LOVE focuses on the cultivated world of a wealthy and distinguished industrial family as they prepare to celebrate the birthday of their patriarch. The gathering in their massive mansion in Milan presents an occasion perfect for reinforcing family traditions—the handsome grandson, Edoardo, introduces his new girlfriend to the family; his sister, Elisabetta, presents a painting she has made to her grandfather; and finally, the grandfather announces his succession plan for the textile business to his family. But all is not as it seems, and slowly but inexorably, a series of small, almost innocuous transgressions begin to unsettle the veneer of manners and etiquette. Academy Award® winner Tilda Swinton (Michael Clayton, Burn After Reading) is magnificent as the patriarch’s immigrant wife and stylish head of the household, the central muse in this intriguing tale of sexual and class politics, repression, and liberation, in which tradition and modernity collide.
