The Vents are coming! The Vents are coming! Ventriloquists, that is. In studying surely one of the world’s oddest professions, this sweetly intimate film explores geeky childhoods, unsupportive families, and wooden split personalities. The inclusion of $100 million-dollar man Terry Fator (2007’s_ America’s Got Talent_ winner) adds to the “who-knew” entertainment value. We start and end at VentHaven, the annual convention of “vents.” There’s pageant queen Kim, who gave 482 school shows last year but longs for a cruise-line gig; Dylan, a 13-year old newbie whose alter-ego Reggie, a black, hip-hopper, mystifies his sports-loving father. And Dan Horn, widely regarded as one of the best ventriloquists in the world, struggling to make his marriage work as he performs on cruise ships 7 months a year. And you won’t be able to forget 6’5” tall Wilma, performing before comatose nursing home patients with child-like enthusiasm despite her own unusually trying circumstances. You will laugh. You will cry. You will remember all your childhood dreams and wonder why you deserted them.

Fellini has no corner on surreal, intense circus performers. Irina and her poodles are as one—their shared love and devotion as intense as the sun.
