Transplanting the upstairs-downstairs comedy to New Delhi, photojournalist Dilip Mehta has crafted a delightful and colorful debut feature scripted in collaboration with his acclaimed filmmaking sister, Deepa Mehta (Water, Earth). Featuring charming turns from Don McKellar (Thirty Two Short Films About Glenn Gould, The Red Violin) and Lisa Ray (Water, Bollywood Hollywood) and a standout performance by the versatile Seema Biswas (Water, Amal, Bandit Queen), COOKING WITH STELLA is great fun to watch as its warmhearted social satire about a Canadian diplomat, Maya, and her chef husband, Michael, unfolds. Upon arrival in the Indian capital, they inherit a household of servants headed by the pleasant, proud, and deceitful cook, Stella. To her surprise, the wife is the diplomat and the husband stays home to look after their baby daughter, and even more shocking, he’s got designs on her kitchen. When Stella finally agrees to become Michael’s culinary guru, little does he know that she’s cooking up a scheme of her own—this is one student-teacher/master-servant relationship that will be sorely tested!
