Special Jury Award for Documentary Filmmaking

Troll 2 is a dumb, awful film. There aren’t even any trolls in it! After a direct-to-landfill release in 1990, everyone involved hoped it would be forgotten. Instead, it became a cult classic, revered by those who laugh at movies instead of with them. In this hilarious, sometimes bittersweet doc, director Michael Paul Stevenson (who fought off goblins with bologna sandwiches as child star of the flick) turns a lens on his co-stars as they host Troll 2 screenings across the country and experience stomach-churning lives as Z-list celebrities. Anchoring the trip is his onscreen dad, George Hardy, a grinning Alabama dentist who embraces the revival gleefully, reciting film dialogue for any fan who asks. On the sidelines is the film’s cranky Italian director who can’t understand why people are laughing at his masterpiece. Stephenson initially chronicles the embarrassment Troll 2 brought him and others—some fled the acting biz; some went stark, raving bonkers. By the end, a sense of community develops among actors and fans—something akin to plane crash survivors—illustrating how movies, even masterpieces of cinematic ineptitude, can bring together very different people for much longer than 90 minutes.

Remember that weird Screen Gems logo that would curl across the television after Bewitched and The Flintstones? Remember the creepy synth music that went along with it? That was some scary sh*t, huh?
