LAYER CAKE marks the exhilarating directorial debut of Matthew Vaughn, producer of the stylized UK crime hits Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch. In London’s murky drug underworld, an unnamed drug dealer (Daniel Craig, Enduring Love) looks to go straight. Before this consummate professional can walk away from his criminal lifestyle and live the simple life, he is asked to complete two last favors by his crime boss, Jimmy Price (Kenneth Cranham, The Boxer). First, he must track down the missing drug-addicted daughter of powerful criminal Eddie Temple (the great Michael Gambon, Gosford Park), and second, he must negotiate a deal for 1 million ecstasy tablets for an unstable crime lord. Nothing goes according to plan, and duplicity and hidden alliances become the order of the day in a struggle for power that reaches multiple levels of British society (the “layer cake”), from crack dens to elite ranks. Getting out won’t be quite as easy as getting in for our no-name “hero” in this riveting thriller that raises the bar of the gangster/crime genre by adding emotional density to a twist-filled narrative.
