HONG KONG/CHINA/USA/FRANCE/ITALY/LUXEMBOURG/UK, 2004, 94 MIN, RATED R, IN ENGLISH, MANDARIN, & ITALIAN W/ENGLISH SUBTITLES
DIRECTED BY WONG KAR-WAI, STEVEN SODERBERGH, & MICHELANGELO ANTONIONI
FLORIDA PREMIERE
A rare movie event, EROS provides an anthology of three short films on the subject of eroticism and desire from a trio of the world’s most outstanding directors: Wong Kar-wai, Steven Soderbergh, and Michelangelo Antonioni. The great Italian director, whose career has spanned six decades and includes such legendary films as L’Aventura and Blow-Up, began this project as his return to filmmaking and then became the driving force that attracted the other two master filmmakers. Each takes his own unique approach to the film’s theme. In Wong’s haunting and richly textured “The Hand,” a young tailor pines for a beautiful Hong Kong courtesan (Gong Li); in Soderbergh’s wry and perverse comedy “Equilibrium,” a 1950s ad executive (Robert Downey Jr.) works with a psychiatrist (Alan Arkin) to determine why his stress from work manifests itself in a recurring erotic dream; and in Antonioni’s philosophical “The Dangerous Thread of Things,” a bickering couple engages in a ménage à trois with a young woman on the coast of Tuscany.
