For 20 years, Oklahoma’s wondrously weird eccentrics, The Flaming Lips, haven’t stood still. In turn incomprehensible and majestically brilliant, the Lips have morphed from punk noise droids to one-hit wonders (“She Don't Use Jelly”) to critically acclaimed elder statesmen of music’s cutting edge. Since meeting band front man Wayne Coyne 16 years ago, filmmaker Bradley Beesley (The Flaming Lips Have Landed, FFF 2000) has had full access to the band and its sometimes dark underbelly. Wrangling hundreds of hours of interviews, live performances, and home movies, Beesley creates a fascinating documentary about an improbable group of musicians who should have imploded years ago. FEARLESS FREAKS supplies an insightful insider’s look at uninhibited creativity, ghetto life, drug addiction, familial influence, and Coyne’s obsessive work ethic. Watch for appearances by Juliette Lewis, Adam Goldberg, Liz Phair, Beck, and Gibby Haynes. The bunny suits and simulated head wounds from their recent tour go unexplained, but if you have to ask, you don’t get it anyway.
