GERMANY/AUSTRIA, 2004, 126 MIN, IN GERMAN W/ENGLISH SUBTITILES
DIRECTED BY HANS WEINGARTNER
Nominated for both the Golden Palm at Cannes and the Best Actor Award at the European Film Awards, THE EDUKATORS examines, in highly entertaining style, the culture clash of rebellious youth and fat-cat bourgeoisie. This intelligent crowd pleaser follows a trio of creative activists attempting to channel their angst and change the society they’re convinced is trying to suffocate them. Daniel Bruhl (Good Bye, Lenin!) leads the three in their effort to illustrate the wrongdoings of the rich by breaking into their homes, rearranging their possessions, and leaving them cryptic notes such as, “Your days of plenty are numbered.” Their aim is not to hurt or steal but rather to cause a little chaos and thereby call attention to the wealth and greed that infests their neighborhood. What’s wrong with a little nonviolent revolution? Using DV and a kinetic style, director Hans Weingartner builds a compelling story that aptly combines comedy, romance (à la Jules and Jim), politics, morality, and betrayal. THE EDUKATORS practices what it preaches.
